Weekly Trading Roundup – Second Week Of March

The second week of March trading is now officially behind us. Although we missed two full days of trading this week, we still came out a bit ahead on things, though not much from an absolute dollar perspective. And as for markets in general, the major US indices all posted their first weekly losses in quite some time, with the S&P500 index finishing the week down about 37 points from last Friday’s close of 1,878. That’s down about 2% for the week.

Frankly, we’re lucky we even made it out of this week profitably. It was actually a very mixed week for us, with one trade in there which just plain should not have been made (mistake), and others that were solid trades that just broke bad in the end. We also missed two full days of trading so who knows, things could have been worse, or then again they may also have ended better. Such is the life of a trader. So moving on to what actually happened, let’s take a look at how all this played out over the course of the week.

Not bad at all on a percentage basis. And the amusing thing is that the whole week’s numbers were saved by a single, accidentally entered long-term trade that just happened, by pure luck, to finish ITM at the end of the week. It was on Wednesday when we intended to purchase a standard, hour expiry high/low put contract on the S&P500. But in our rush to get entered into the trade at the price point we wanted in at we accidentally clicked wrong and purchased a long-term put option instead, expiring in two days at Friday’s close. That was a +$175 difference right there. Most of the week’s profits.

It was an interesting week for the markets though, and we finally seem to be getting that correction which we have been waiting for, and calling for. But the opening of next week will be very important to that thesis. If we see a strong comeback on Monday then we would have to rethink our current ideas, and step back a bit with strictly short-run technical trades. Hopefully that won’t be the case though, and instead we’ll get the chance to get in on some juicy long-term trades for larger investment amounts. Until then, trade smart and be lucky people!
